This blog was written for couples who want more than basic photos, But want Art. If that sounds like you keep reading.

Here is a funny story that happens almost every single time I capture a love story at Inniswood Metro Gardens. I count at least two other photographers already there with their couples. We nod at each other. Very professional. Then I quietly walk my couples in the complete opposite direction, to the spots most photographers never find, the corners that take experience and familiarity to discover, the frames that make people stop scrolling when they see them. By the end of the session, those photographers have packed up and gone home. And my couple is hugging me so hard I nearly drop my camera.

Every. Single. Time.

That hug is not politeness. It is what happens when someone sees a preview of their gallery, and cannot quite believe what they are looking at.

After nearly a decade of shooting here, I know where the magic lives at Inniswood. Not the obvious spots. the real ones. And this blog is about exactly that.

I am Ahmed, the photographer behind Sassi Photo, and over nearly a decade of capturing engaged couples across Columbus and Central Ohio, I keep recommending Inniswood Metro Gardens to my engaged couples when they want to create an Elegant gallery that is truly extraordinary.

Inniswood Metro Gardens is a 123-acre botanical garden and nature preserve that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and meticulously curated gardens.

It sits just fifteen minutes north of downtown Columbus, quietly magnificent, and almost always more breathtaking than couples expect when they first arrive.

I photographed Dounya and Zayd here. And from the moment we walked through the entrance together, they knew this session was going to produce a personal gallery for them, not because they are a beautiful couple (though they are), but also because the garden met them exactly where they were. Elegant without trying.

That is what Inniswood does to people who are ready for it. and this is what I want you to explore if you're an Elegant couple looking for an Elegant location to reflect who truly you are.

Why Inniswood Is an Elegant Location for Elegant Couples

Inniswood is unique in that it is man-made and designed gardens and not simply a natural park.  It was born from the vision of two sisters, Grace and Mary Innis, who spent decades cultivating their private estate with an artist's eye for form, color, and beauty. In 1972, they donated their property to Metro Parks, and what was once their private world became one of the most extraordinary public gardens in the Midwest.

That origin story matters. Because you can feel it the moment you step inside. This is not a park that happened naturally. Every garden, every pathway, every stone wall and arching trellis was placed with intention. Inniswood boasts more than 2,000 species of plants, specialty collections and themed gardens, and the result is a landscape that shifts and transforms as you move through it, offering a completely different visual world every fifty steps.

For couples who want photos that feel elegant, who are drawn to romance, texture, and a timeless quality rather than trendy backdrops, Inniswood is one of the few locations in Central Ohio that delivers all of that without effort. your gallery can move from grand and romantic to intimate and woodland-quiet to dramatic and editorial. Each section of the park has its own light, its own mood, its own relationship with the couple standing inside it. The result feels less like a photoshoot and more like a visual story with chapters.

The Best Spots at Inniswood for Engagement Photos

The Rose Garden

This is where the session usually begins and where the gallery finds its first breath. Hundreds of rose varieties in structured, meticulously maintained beds, the kind of setting that makes every couple look like they stepped into a European botanical print. The herb garden trellis entryway is one of the most popular spots in the park for photos.

The Waterfall and Stone Staircase.

Behind the original Innis House, now the park's education center, lies one of the most dramatic portrait spots in all of Inniswood. The waterfall area features a winding sidewalk, a stone staircase, and a small creek. The cascading water adds movement and sound to the background. The stone architecture gives photos a timeless, almost European quality. This is the spot that tends to produce the most unexpected frames of the entire session.

The Boardwalk Trail through the Beech-Maple Forest.

The Boardwalk trail winds through a beech-maple forest, and walking into it from the open gardens feels like stepping into another world entirely. The light here is filtered, green, and impossibly soft. The old trees arch overhead and close the world off around you. Couples who feel nervous in open, exposed settings almost always relax completely on the boardwalk .

The Woodland Rock Garden.

The Woodland Rock Garden consists of layers of rock with waterfalls, plants, and just beautiful landscaping. For couples who want elegance with more artistry something that feels more personal and romantic, this section of the park delivers. The layered stone, the running water, the mature conifers overhead.

The small wooden bridge.

This one most people walk right past. A rustic wooden bridge sits just off the sidewalk, typically with tall grasses and wildflowers in bloom during the summer.

Every season at Inniswood is genuinely, distinctly beautiful. Here is what each one gives you:

Spring is the season of transformation. Daffodils arrive first, followed by tulips, then the cherry blossoms near the entrance that turn the pathways into something almost cinematic. The Rose Garden begins its early blooms. Everything is fresh, the light is clean and cool, and the park has a quality of awakening that translates beautifully into photographs.

Summer is abundance. The Rose Garden is in full, extravagant bloom. The herb garden is lush and fragrant. The boardwalk forest is a cathedral of deep green. Golden hour sessions in July and August produce some of the warmest, most luminous light I work with all year. This is the season for couples who want richness and color.

Fall is where Inniswood becomes otherworldly. The beech-maple forest on the boardwalk trail turns amber and gold, and the filtered afternoon light through those leaves creates a quality that cannot be manufactured in any other season. I consider October and early November at Inniswood to be among the most extraordinary portrait conditions available anywhere in Central Ohio.

Winter, finally, is underrated and quietly spectacular. Bare branches against a soft grey sky. Frost on the garden structures. An emptiness and stillness in the park that makes couples feel like they have the whole world to themselves. Some of the most elegant, spare, and dramatically beautiful engagement photos I have ever taken here happened in January.

Inniswood Metro Gardens... Everything You Need in One Place

One of the things I love most about Inniswood as a working photographer is that this location is genuinely all-inclusive. Within a single, unhurried session, we can move through the formal rose garden, the woodland forest trail, the waterfall architecture, three distinct bridge settings, and the more wild and organic pond edges. The park features several trails catering to different preferences and abilities, all within easy walking distance of each other and all fully paved or boardwalked for accessibility.

Admission is completely free. Parking is free and abundant. Inniswood also has two restrooms conveniently located throughout the park one near the entrance and one toward the back, which makes outfit changes during the session easy and private. You arrive. We walk. The garden does the rest.

My Tips for Best Results at Inniswood

This section is where I hand you the keys. These are the things I have learned from shooting here that nobody else is telling you, and they make the difference between a good session and an extraordinary one.

Arrive on a weekday if you can. While it can get crowded on weekends, visiting on a quieter weekday allows for a more tranquil experience. On a weekday golden hour, I have had entire sections of this park to myself with couples, the boardwalk, the waterfall, the bridges, all of it. That solitude translates directly into more intimate, less self-conscious images.

Start later than you think you should. The park opens at 6:30am, but the light for photography does not truly come alive until late afternoon. I schedule every Inniswood session to arrive 90 minutes before sunset and work through golden hour. That window of light is when everything turns warm, soft, and painterly.

Dress for the environment, not the season. Inniswood's botanical palette is warm and rich, amber brick, deep green, aged wood, soft stone. Outfits in cream, ivory, sage, dusty rose, warm tan, or deep burgundy sit perfectly within that palette. Bold graphic prints compete with the garden rather than complement it. Classic silhouettes and elevated fabrics photograph most beautifully here. I send every couple a detailed style guide specific to this location before our session.

Bring an outfit change. The park has two private restrooms, which makes changing between looks completely easy. I always recommend one more structured, elevated outfit for the garden sections, and one softer, more flowing look for the boardwalk forest — the contrast gives the gallery natural variety without requiring any additional planning. Click here to get my ultimate guide to color matching your engagement outfits.

Do not skip the waterfall. Most couples who have done sessions at Inniswood show me their photos afterward and say the waterfall section was their favorite. It is tucked behind the Innis House, slightly off the main path, and most visitors walk past it without realizing it is there. I always make sure we find it. It is consistently one of the most dramatic and unexpected frames in the entire gallery.

Be prepared for wildlife. Inniswood is a functioning nature preserve and the wildlife is real, deer, birds, butterflies, and pollinators are all active throughout the park. Far from being a distraction, wildlife in the background of an engagement portrait adds a layer of magic that no set design could replicate. I watch for it and use it whenever the moment presents itself.

What Sassi Photo Bring to Your Inniswood Engagement Session

Knowing a location is not the same as knowing it intimately. I have photographed at Inniswood in every season, in every light condition, at every hour of the day. I know which corner of the Rose Garden catches the best directional light in late afternoon. I know which bridge produces the cleanest reflection on a still summer evening. I know when to slow the session down and when to move quickly, and I know how to read the sky and the garden together to find the frames that only exist for a few minutes at a time.

Beyond the location knowledge, I bring the same preparation and guidance I bring to every session I photograph. Before we arrive, every couple works through outfit selection with me, understands the session flow, and has had the posing conversation that makes the difference between stiff, self-conscious photos and ones that look completely effortless. By the time we step through Inniswood's entrance together, you are not nervous. You are ready. And the garden takes care of everything else.

About Me,

I am Ahmed, the photographer and creative director behind Sassi Photo. For nearly a decade, I have been capturing engaged and married couples across Columbus and Central Ohio — guiding them through every step of the experience from the first conversation to the final gallery.

My work is built around one belief: your love story deserves to be turned into art. Not documentation. Not a record of what you were wearing or where you stood. Art. Something that carries the feeling of this exact season of your life — the joy, the anticipation, the warmth of being completely sure about someone.

The couples who work with me are not looking for basic. They are looking for something personal, elegant, and genuinely unlike anything they have seen before.

If that sounds like you, I would love to hear from you.
