Walk through its doors and you immediately leave the feeling of a typical modern hotel behind. The historic architecture, marble, tall ceilings, stained glass, mirrors and Grand Ballroom give the property a character that simply cannot be recreated by adding decorations to an empty event space. Then you step outside and you're in the middle of downtown Columbus, giving us an entirely different environment for portraits within minutes.

That combination is what caught my attention as a wedding photographer. Inside, I can create something refined and elegant. Outside, downtown gives us architecture, movement, city lights and a more editorial atmosphere. When evening arrives and the ballroom lights come on, I can change the photography again with flash, reflections, movement and creative angles.

2. WHY THE WESTIN FEELS DIFFERENT

A lot of hotel wedding venues give you convenience. You have rooms upstairs, a ballroom downstairs and everything happens under one roof. The Westin gives you that convenience, but it also gives you character.

Imagine waking up on your wedding morning already inside the building where you'll celebrate later that evening. Your closest people begin arriving, hair and makeup starts, your dress is waiting, and downstairs your vendors are transforming the ballroom while you don't have to think about any of it.

Later, we can use the historic hotel for elegant portraits, step outside and suddenly have downtown Columbus as another backdrop, then return for your ceremony and reception without spending a huge part of the day traveling between locations.

For me, that creates one of the things I value most when helping my couples plan their wedding photography: variety without unnecessary rushing. I don't want you spending your wedding day sitting in a car because we need to travel 30 minutes just to create another look. At The Westin, the contrast is already around us.

One of the most interesting things about The Westin Great Southern Columbus is that its historic character isn't something created recently to fit a wedding trend. The Great Southern has been part of downtown Columbus since the late 1800s, giving the property a sense of history that newer wedding venues simply cannot manufacture.

More than a century later, couples are now walking through this historic building to begin completely new chapters of their own. I love that contrast because you're not trying to make a modern ballroom look historic for your wedding. The history is already part of the architecture and personality of the building.

That gives your wedding photographs something important: a genuine sense of place. Years from now, your photographs won't simply show a beautiful room. They will show exactly where this part of your family's story began.

4. THE GRAND BALLROOM

If there is one room that defines a Westin Great Southern Columbus wedding, it is the Grand Ballroom. At approximately 4,140 square feet with ceilings reaching around 25 feet, the room immediately feels grander than a typical hotel ballroom. The Westin currently lists capacity for approximately 300 guests banquet-style and as many as 420 for a reception.

But capacity isn't what makes me interested in this room. It's the visual character. The tall ceilings give everything breathing room, while the stained glass, mirrors, marble and architectural details give the room an elegant foundation before you even begin adding florals, linens or lighting.

For photography, those elements give me layers to work with. I can create a clean, symmetrical portrait that allows the architecture to become part of the composition. I can use reflections to create something less expected. I can photograph wide enough to show the scale of the ballroom, then move close enough that the entire room disappears and the photograph becomes only about the two of you.

The room doesn't create the photograph for me. It gives me the ingredients, and creativity is what allows us to turn those ingredients into something personal.

5. CEREMONY OPTIONS AT THE WESTIN

One advantage of choosing a hotel wedding venue is the ability to keep different parts of your celebration inside the same property. The Westin offers multiple event rooms that can accommodate different portions of the wedding depending on your guest count and layout.

The Grand Ballroom can accommodate a large celebration, while spaces such as Seneca, Thurber and the Great Southern Gallery provide additional possibilities for smaller gatherings and different portions of your wedding day. The Seneca Room, for example, is approximately 1,250 square feet and can accommodate up to 120 guests banquet-style, while the Great Southern Gallery is approximately 1,200 square feet and accommodates around 70 banquet-style.

This flexibility becomes particularly valuable when we're building your wedding timeline. Instead of guests needing to drive from a ceremony location to the reception, everything can happen more naturally within one property. That means fewer logistical problems for you and more time for us to focus on the people and moments that actually matter.

6. GETTING READY AT THE WESTIN

I always tell my couples that your wedding story begins long before the ceremony. It begins while the room still feels relatively quiet. Someone is steaming the dress, your bridesmaids are finishing makeup, your closest friends are laughing, and your mom walks in and suddenly realizes that the day everyone has been talking about is actually here. Those are the moments I want.

Having hotel rooms and suites directly inside your wedding venue can make this part of the day considerably easier. Instead of getting ready somewhere else, packing everything into cars and hoping everyone arrives on time, you can already be where the wedding is happening.

It also gives us more flexibility photographically. I can photograph details, move between different parts of the day and plan first looks or portraits without losing valuable time traveling across Columbus. Because the property itself has historic character, we can also move beyond the hotel room when we want something more refined. The entire building becomes part of our creative space.

7. COCKTAIL HOUR & RECEPTION

There is a moment during almost every wedding when the energy completely changes. The ceremony is finished, the formal photographs are done, guests have drinks in their hands, conversations get louder, dinner begins, speeches happen, and eventually everyone realizes they don't need to behave anymore. Then the dance floor opens.

This is where I want your Westin gallery to change too. The photographs we created earlier may have been clean, elegant and carefully composed. During the reception, I can introduce movement, direct flash, reflections, layers and more unusual perspectives.

The Grand Ballroom gives us chandeliers, mirrors, marble, architecture and a large dance-floor environment to incorporate creatively. I'm not interested in standing in one corner and documenting the entire reception from the same angle. I want to move through your people and look for the little opening between two guests where I suddenly see you laughing together. I want your guests to become foreground and movement to become part of the photograph.

The reception should feel alive in your gallery because that's exactly how it felt when you were actually there.

8. THE BEST WEDDING PHOTO LOCATIONS AT THE WESTIN GREAT SOUTHERN COLUMBUS

One of my favorite things about The Westin Great Southern Columbus is the ability to create completely different photographs without needing to spend your wedding day traveling across the city.

Inside the hotel, the Grand Ballroom gives us scale, symmetry, stained glass, mirrors and marble. The historic hallways and architectural details can create quieter and more intimate portraits, while windows can give us beautiful directional light for something softer and more refined.

The lobby and common areas can also become part of the story when approached intentionally. Instead of simply placing you beside an attractive wall, I'm looking for depth, foreground, reflections and ways to incorporate the architecture so the photograph actually feels designed.

Then we step outside and everything changes. We're no longer creating photographs inside an elegant historic hotel. We're photographing a bride and groom surrounded by downtown Columbus.

That contrast is exactly what can make the final gallery so interesting. Your gallery shouldn't feel like hundreds of variations of the same photograph. It should feel like your wedding unfolded through different chapters.

9. DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS WEDDING PHOTOS

The Westin sits directly on South High Street, which puts us in a completely different photographic environment the moment we leave the hotel. Instead of fields and trees, we have buildings, streets, architecture, crosswalks, reflections, traffic, movement and city light.

For the right couple, that can be incredible. Imagine beginning with elegant portraits inside the hotel, then stepping onto the street for something more editorial. Your wedding attire suddenly contrasts against the city around you while people are moving in the background and buildings create lines and layers around you.

After sunset, downtown changes again. Streetlights come on, windows begin reflecting light and headlights move through the background. I can introduce flash and create something completely different from the photographs we made earlier.

This is why I don't think of wedding photography as simply finding pretty spots. I'm looking for environments that allow me to tell different parts of your story differently.

10. WEDDING CAPACITY & EVENT SPACES

The Westin Great Southern Columbus currently lists eight event rooms totaling approximately 9,125 square feet. The Grand Ballroom is the largest at approximately 4,140 square feet and can accommodate up to 300 guests banquet-style or 420 for a reception arrangement.

The Seneca Room is approximately 1,250 square feet and accommodates up to 120 banquet guests. Thurber is approximately 960 square feet and accommodates around 80 banquet guests, while the Great Southern Gallery is approximately 1,200 square feet and accommodates around 70 banquet guests. Several smaller rooms are also available for intimate gatherings or supporting portions of a larger wedding.

If you're planning a larger wedding, I wouldn't look only at the maximum number of people a room technically accommodates. Ask the venue to show you exactly what the ballroom will look like with your guest count, dance floor, head table, DJ or band, cake, décor and desired table layout.

There's an important difference between asking, "Can 300 people fit?" and asking, "Will 300 people feel comfortable in the wedding we're actually planning?"

11. HOW MUCH DOES A WESTIN GREAT SOUTHERN COLUMBUS WEDDING COST?

Wedding pricing at The Westin Great Southern Columbus depends heavily on your wedding date, guest count, food and beverage selections, ceremony requirements and the exact spaces you use, so I wouldn't build your budget around one simple venue-rental number.

Current wedding listings show the overall starting wedding price around $15,000, while reception site fees have been listed starting around $2,000 and ceremony site fees around $3,000 to $4,000 depending on the season. The Westin's current event information also lists dinner and reception catering around $75 per person as general event catering figures. These numbers are useful for understanding the general range, but they should not be treated as your final wedding quote.

Older wedding menus can still be found online with previous package structures and prices, but I would not use those numbers to build a current wedding budget. Instead, ask The Westin for a personalized wedding proposal based on your exact date, estimated guest count and selections.

That will give you a much clearer understanding of what your complete Westin wedding will actually cost.

12. WHAT'S INCLUDED IN A WESTIN WEDDING?

One advantage of a full-service hotel wedding is that several major pieces of the reception can potentially be handled through one property rather than requiring you to coordinate every element independently.

Current wedding information indicates that depending on your agreement, items such as tables, chairs, linens, china, flatware, glassware, setup and cleanup may be included within the venue arrangements. Catering and bar service can also be coordinated through the hotel, while customized catering menus allow you to shape the dining experience around your celebration.

The property also gives you something an independent event venue cannot always provide so easily: guest accommodations directly upstairs. That can simplify the experience not only for you but also for friends and family traveling to Columbus for your wedding.

When you're comparing wedding venues, don't compare only the room rental number. Look at what you still need to arrange and pay for after the room is booked. Sometimes convenience has real value.

13. WHY HAVING EVERYTHING AT ONE HOTEL CAN MAKE YOUR WEDDING EASIER

Wedding days can become complicated surprisingly quickly. The bride is getting ready at one location, the groom is somewhere else, the ceremony is at another venue, family needs transportation, the wedding party needs to move again, guests need parking, and then everyone has to make it to the reception. Every additional location creates another opportunity to lose time.

A hotel wedding can simplify that dramatically. You can potentially get ready upstairs, come downstairs for photographs, celebrate the ceremony and reception in the same property, and finish the night without needing another trip. Your traveling guests can stay there too.

From my perspective as your photographer, fewer unnecessary transitions give us something extremely valuable: time. Time to let your mom have her moment instead of telling her we need to leave. Time to fix something without panicking. Time to create a portrait when the light suddenly becomes beautiful. Most importantly, time for you to actually enjoy the wedding you've spent months planning.

14. MY PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS FOR A WESTIN GREAT SOUTHERN COLUMBUS WEDDING

The first thing I would do is build enough breathing room into your timeline to use both sides of this venue's personality. I wouldn't want to photograph your entire wedding inside the ballroom when downtown Columbus is sitting right outside the doors, but I also wouldn't want to drag you around the city for an hour simply because we can.

We can be much more intentional than that. I'd plan a short period for elegant portraits inside the hotel and another carefully selected window for downtown photographs. Depending on your ceremony time and season, we could also watch the light and decide whether stepping outside for another 10 or 15 minutes would add something completely different to your gallery.

I'd also think carefully about your first look. Having everything in one building can give us opportunities to create that moment somewhere quieter before the day becomes busy. Afterward, we can complete some couple and wedding-party photographs early, giving you more freedom after the ceremony.

And I wouldn't forget the ballroom before your guests enter. After months of choosing linens, flowers, table arrangements, stationery, lighting and little details, I want a few minutes to photograph the room while it is untouched. Later that same ballroom will be filled with people, laughter and movement. You deserve photographs of both.

15. IS THE WESTIN GREAT SOUTHERN COLUMBUS RIGHT FOR YOUR WEDDING?

The Westin should be high on your list if you're drawn toward a wedding that feels elegant, historic and metropolitan rather than rustic or countryside-inspired.

It makes particular sense for couples who love architectural character, want a formal ballroom reception, expect a medium-to-large guest list, have guests traveling into Columbus, appreciate the convenience of hotel accommodations and want downtown portrait possibilities within easy reach.

It can also be especially interesting for couples who care deeply about photography because we aren't restricted to one visual environment. Inside can feel refined and historic. Outside can feel modern and editorial. Once the reception begins, the same wedding can become energetic and dramatic. One wedding doesn't need to have one look.

Before booking, walk into the Grand Ballroom when it's empty. Look at the scale of the room, the stained glass, mirrors, marble and architecture. Then step outside onto High Street and look at downtown around you.

Don't only ask yourself whether the venue is beautiful. Ask yourself something more personal: Can I see our wedding becoming ours here?
